Abstract

From the unnerving proliferation of critical responses to Pynchon's fiction in the seventeen years since the publication of The Crying of Lot 49, one of the more positive directions to emerge is traceable back to Edward Mendelson's Introduction to the Twentieth Century Views volume of essays.
