Abstract
Any number of provocative considerations suggest themselves when we consider the peculiar position of American literature in China--not to say modern American writers, and certainly not to say so contemporary a writer as Thomas Pynchon. The institutional commitment on the part of the Chinese to American literature is quite extensive, and would require a separate essay in itself.
